I will start by stating that this was my first battle in ten years too... :D
My Nighthaunts were dealing with Iron Golems (I like those models!) fielded by an old friend and adversary visiting from abroad. I hastily sprayed a gaming surface and found some terrain bits, and dug out a pair of rally old Fell Bats (on improper bases!) and a handful of Nighthaunts. The choice was based on the fact I only had five models to paint up: A Knight of Shrouds (Sir Robin), an Extoller of Shyish (Dead Ringer), three Reapers (Inox, Marx and Golden Harvest) a Chain rasp (Rex) and a pair of bats (Bruce and Wayne).
I lost the game, but had some wins:
1) although I found the icons confusing initially, the rules are fairly simple and surprisingly enjoyable once you get the hang of your crew
2) I painted five models in a day, something I rarely do. Not having time to think helps!
3) I killed his Iron Golem - which absorbed a lot of attention, but it was still satisfying. One of the Reapers, Marx, inflicted 23 wounds (including four on himself!) before being killed, leaving Sir Robin the Knight of Shrouds to step in from the back and kill him. Sir Robin was as brave as his namesake, and was the only survivor apart from the bats.
4) Fellbats have a huge range of 10 inches (20 " if you move twice), and I really should have done more with it.
5) It was fun even though I was still coming to grips with the rules.
6) Lastly, even though the ineptness of Chainrasps is the one existing thing the ENTIRE internet seems to agree on, poor little Rex (I almost took a dire wolf almost-skeletal doggy model instead, hence his name) blocked a group of fighters for a while, and died (well, re-died) heroically.
